Humor is central to the whimsical western caricatures of Cecil Wakefield. Among the top woodcarvers of all time, Wakefield won more ribbons and Grand Awards than anyone of his time, 1932-2003, local legend, national icon, and international reputation. These twelve inch caricatures were his bread and butter. While his serious carvings and bronzes soar in five figure territory, this multiple set remains at “caricature “ prices.
Each of his carvings is carved in time honored standard of “carving” with knives and gouges, NO POWER tools, the woodcarvers’ creed. Wakefield judges many art shows and wrote the book on wood carving, sharing his knowledge and skills with his many colleagues.
SHOTGUN WEDDING is one of his best inventions, and only a few exist, each more hilarious than the last. Actually, that’s true of most Wakefield carvings. No matter how many he carved, each seemed to have a whimsy of it’s own. Oil painted for highlights and protection.
About twelve inches in size, this set has a Preacher, bride, mother, father, and delighted grandparents, of course, the SHOTGUN is focal, and a custom base accompanies the set.
True ORIGINAL COLLECTIBLE! Circa1970-80.
